Tsvetan Assenov, district governor of Vidin, welcomed the Israel ambassador, His Excellency Saul Kamisa Raz

On March 7 Eng. Tsvetan Assenov, district governor of Vidin, welcomed the Israel ambassador, His Excellency Saul Kamisa Raz.

The visit is on account of the initiative Do Good– 70 Good Deeds, which is organized by the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria Shalom. The campaign is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the salvation of Bulgarian Jews in 1943 and to honor the memory of the Jews from Macedonia, Aegean Thrace, and Pirot, who perished in the Nazi death camps during the Second World War.

Eng. Assenov and H.E. Saul Kamisa Raz held a work meeting at the Vidin District Administration premises. The meeting was attended by Dr. Alexander Oscar, Vice President of the European Council of Jewish Communities, Deputy Chair of the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria Shalom, and Chair of the Regional  Organization of Jews in Sofia.

The meeting discussed the opportunities for cooperation in the area of tourism relating to the cultural-historical heritage in the region, as well as spa tourism. There was also discussion of the opportunities for joint projects in the area of farming, light and processing industry. The district governor introduced Mr. Raz to the idea to set up an intermodal logistical terminal and car part in the surroundings of the city of Vidin.

The district governor presented to the guests the project to restore the Vidin synagogue, as well as the idea to establish an Initiative Committee for the organization of cultural-information events on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the construction of the Vidin synagogue. The anniversary will be in October 2014. The idea is for the Initiative Committee to involve the Vidin District Administration, the State Archive – Vidin, the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria Shalom, the AKIN foundation, APER – Alexander Proynov, NGO’s, intellectuals, and business representatives. Brought to the ambassador’s attention were the individual awareness-educational and cultural events scheduled to be held during the period May 2013 – October 2014. The ambassador stated his support for the commenced projects and welcomed the initiatives brought to his attention.

Following the meeting at the District Administration premises, the guests visited the Medical Center of the Sveta Petka Hospital where they gave free spectacles to children with eye problems ascertained during the examinations held during the period March 3-7.

The dignitaries were introduced to the team of experts from the Alexandrovska hospital, who for nearly a week examined free of charge children from the municipalities of Vidin and Kula in the framework of the initiative Do Good– 70 Good Deeds.

The ambassador’s agenda continued with a meeting with the Jewish community in Vidin and then H.E. Saul Kamisa Raz and Eng. Assenov laid flowers at the Jewish monument in Vidin.

Prior to his departure the Israel ambassador held a press conference at the District Administration premises. His Excellency Saul Kamisa Raz announced that he would visit Vidin again in mid-May together with Israeli business representatives. Mr. Raz stated his support to the wellbeing of the local community and expressed gratitude for the joint work to the Vidin District Administration, the municipalities of Vidin and Kula, the leadership of the local hospital, Lions’ Club-Vidin, and to the representatives of Quadrant Beverages Bulgaria for the unwavering support during implementation of the initiative Do Good– 70 Good Deeds.

During the press conference Dr. Alexander Oscar summarized the results frm the free eye examinations conducted in Vidin and Kula. In the course of five days 753 children were examined, 149 of them being from Kula. The average age of the children gone through the examinations was eight and a half. Spectacles were prescribed to 82 children. Some of the free spectacles given have already been received by the patients, with the others due to arrive next week, the district administration have announced.
